This area of northeastern Florida is situated on the St. Johns River near the border with Georgia along the Atlantic Ocean. Though the city is plenty large, some families may choose to live in the surrounding suburbs. On the southern side of Jacksonville are the towns of Orange Park (8,400 people), Lakeside (31,000), and Palm Valley (20,000). Yulee, 11,500 residents, is north of base. These suburbs are 20-40 minutes outside of downtown. The city itself is broken down into hundreds of different neighborhoods; the biggest of these are Avondale, San Marco, LaVilla, Riverside, Brooklyn, and Eastside. Often portions are also referred to as Northside, Southside, Westside, and Jacksonville Beaches. Other nearby cities include Green Cove Springs, Mandarin, and Fleming Island.
